Sanctuary at Dover Friends Meeting:

Historic Preservation and Renovation for

A Contemporary Ministry with Deep Roots in Dover’s Past

Dover Friends (Quakers) are answering the timeless call to welcome the stranger with a Sanctuary ministry of mercy and refuge. We offer lodging, safety, respite and companionship to asylum seekers and other immigrants, in our 1768 meetinghouse. They come to us weary and traumatized. We know this mission of hospitality is our work to do. The City of Dover, NH has been supportive. However, to continue our ministry of radical welcome, we must make structural repairs and fire safety upgrades to our historic building.

Will you help us continue to offer compassion to the stranger?

Our leading to offer Sanctuary began in 2017. Way opened to assist a family of four asylum seekers. They needed urgent refuge and stayed with us for two months until they established their legal case.  We were crestfallen when the City of Dover told us we needed to halt the lodging aspect of our Sanctuary work until safety upgrades were made.

In the process of assessing the building for these safety changes, we learned of serious structural damage in the post and beam building frame. These repairs must be made before the fire safety work can begin.

We are clear to make these repairs and upgrades. We are also finding ways to live into our call by gathering a larger faith network to join in the ministry as we raise funds for this work.
